THE EDDIE MACS

Last summer I joined a golf group called: “The Eddie Macs”…
It’s been a fantastic experience!

The Eddie Macs got its name from founder Eddie MacDonald.

My friend Bob, who I sometimes call the commissioner, is the group’s new leader.  Every Monday each member of The Eddie Macs receives an e-mail from Bob asking who’s in for the following weekend… A simple affirmative reply on or before Thursday at 4:00 PM means you’ve got a game!

Like most golf groups, The Eddie Macs is made up of a bunch of likeminded golfers.  Beside our leader Bob and me are regulars:  Skip, Tom, Mark, Lee, Nick, John and Bruce.  In addition, there another five or six guys who can’t play every week… but are always welcome when they can make it.

The day begins when we meet on the driving range to loosen up, move to the putting green where we make up the foursomes… then off we go.

The wager is always $10.00 and the game is played as a two player blind draw so it doesn’t matter who plays in each foursome. We decided to mix things up a little by playing point quota on Saturdays and best ball on Sundays… it works out just great.

Bob bought a bunch of popsicle sticks; he inscribed each with the name of one of the group’s members.    After the round, while we wait to eat lunch, Bob draws the Popsicle sticks with our names, makes up the teams and announces the winners.

I can’t tell you if I more enjoy the golf or the camaraderie, but together they provide a fantastic Saturday or Sunday experience that I always look forward to – thank you Eddie Mac!

Golf is truly a social game and is most enjoyed when you are part of a group of like-minded players.  Before I joined The Eddie Macs I had, through the years, the privilege of being part of several golf groups all of which I thoroughly enjoyed.

While playing most of my golf in Massachusetts, I was invited to join a bunch called the Blue Group. When you played with the Blue group it was always from the back tees (blue markers) and no putts were ever given.

During a period in the 1980’s, and in Florida, I was part of a weekly golf group named the JG Tour. Most of the JG Tour players were golf professionals who could really play… it was not only great fun to compete, but I saw some
incredible golf shots.

All of my golf group experiences have provided me a great deal of enjoyment and memories. But, more importantly I have made friendships for a lifetime.

The game of golf attracts a wide variety of personalities; frequently some unusual and interesting characters emerge. But, despite the wide diversity among golfer personalities they all share a passion for the game, and a passion for friendship; the two truly go hand in hand.

It’s not so much how you play, although hitting good shots is never a bad thing, but who you play the game with that makes golf so special.

Whether you are a man or a woman player, a low handicapper or new to the game, like to compete or prefer to be passive I sincerely hope that you are part of a group of like-minded golfers – enjoyment from golf will be enhanced for a lifetime.
